Little Buddy Companion Guide

Little Buddy is GRAIN ROT’s companion helper that hangs around the Outpost and can follow players during surface and run prep. Launch-week Patch 1.04 added clear start/stop follow animation and sound, which sounds cosmetic until you realize silent follow failures were scrambling co-op callouts. This guide explains what Little Buddy is for, how to use the new feedback, and how companions fit beside vessel roles and co-op tips.

Beck & Branch Games did not ship Little Buddy as a combat pet that clears Elite Encounters for you. Treat it as a companion readability system — useful for orientation, morale of the Outpost fantasy, and keeping newer Scrappies oriented while veterans smash furniture for scrap.

Why Patch 1.04 changed companion usability

Before 1.04, players reported confusion about whether Little Buddy was still following. In a noise-heavy extraction game, ambiguity is expensive: someone peels off to “find Buddy,” the Grinder screams unguarded, and Corrupted close from a second doorway. Official Steam notes for Patch 1.04 list:

  • Added start/stop follow animation and sound for Little Buddy

That single line is a UX fix with run-level consequences. After updating, rehearse follow toggles at the Outpost before your first deep layer of the night — same hygiene as checking multiplayer lobby privacy.

What Little Buddy is (and is not)

Is:

  • A companion presence at the Outpost that reinforces the “rebuild the shelter” fantasy
  • A follow target with clearer audio-visual start/stop cues after 1.04
  • Useful orientation for new players learning pathways between Murch, the elevator, and storage

Is not:

  • A substitute for Anchor / Flex roles underground
  • Guaranteed aggro bait that replaces constructs from constructs & furniture
  • A reason to ignore rot cures before elevator rides — see Rot Sickness

If your crew expected an attack dog, recalibrate. GRAIN ROT still wins on player coordination, not companion DPS.

Outpost workflow with Little Buddy

  1. Spawn / load the Outpost after Steam update 1.04+ (preferably 1.06).
  2. Locate Little Buddy near common NPC routes — Quill’s outdoor patrol was separately fixed in 1.06 so surface NPCs stop walking into fire.
  3. Toggle follow and watch for the start animation + sound confirmation.
  4. Walk a short loop past Murch’s workshop, room upgrades, and the basement elevator so new players learn the path.
  5. Toggle stop follow before crowded four-player mic checks so Buddy does not clutter camera framing during rules briefings.

Use this loop while assigning Scout / Carrier / Anchor / Flex roles from co-op tips.

Co-op etiquette around companions

Companions amplify chaos if four players yank follow ownership without callouts. House rules that work:

  • One Buddy handler per session unless you explicitly rotate after extract
  • Call “Buddy on me” when starting follow so Flex does not assume the companion is free
  • Never chase Buddy into the scorch outside without a rot/fire plan — surface sunlight still burns exposed wood
  • Do not block the elevator threshold with companion pathing during emergency extracts

If someone disconnects mid-run, remember Patch 1.04 also moved client loot to drops or the lost and found crate — companions do not recover that loot for you. Hosts still ping drop spots.

Pairing Buddy practice with other launch systems

Launch 1.0 layered many Outpost systems at once: second floor, Enchantment & Repair, legendary gachas, player leveling. Little Buddy sits in the “readable Outpost life” bucket. Practice companions while:

  • Banking gold toward room upgrades
  • Rolling legendary gumballs only after Patch 1.06’s reward fix
  • Confirming lobby mic volumes so Buddy SFX does not drown Corrupted callouts

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

When did Little Buddy get follow animations?

Patch 1.04 (August 10, 2026) added start/stop follow animation and sound for Little Buddy.

Does Little Buddy fight Corrupted?

No. Treat Little Buddy as a companion and Outpost orientation helper, not a combat pet that replaces player roles.

Should I update before using Little Buddy in co-op?

Yes. Use 1.04+ for follow cues and prefer 1.06 for Quill fire, legendary gumball, and connection security fixes.

Can multiple players control Little Buddy?

Avoid fighting over follow. Assign one handler per session so callouts stay clear during extracts.
