GRAIN ROT Item Storage & Stash Guide

Bank rare tools at the Outpost so a greedy deep wipe does not erase your compass and shop weapons.

Item Storage & Stash Guide

GRAIN ROT punishes players who treat every valuable as something that must ride every elevator. Item storage at the Outpost — shelves, crates, room layouts, and deliberate “leave it home” discipline — is how crews keep compasses, spare mallets, and shop-cube weapons safe between runs. This guide covers what to stash, what to carry, and how storage ties into furniture scavenging, Grinder loops, and room upgrades.

Community tip footage (including short “storing items” clips) shows the same pattern veterans already know from other extraction titles: rare tools are progression insurance. If you wipe while carrying them, you buy them again. If you bank them after a successful extract, tomorrow’s shallow run still has a compass.

Why storage beats greed

Into Indie Games and launch-week guides both stress that useful items are rare and expensive. Compasses help you find the elevator bearing in procedural ruins. Weapons from Murch or modifier shop cubes change fight outcomes. Beds restore HP in some rooms. None of that matters if you throw them into a doomed deep push after your vessels are already splintered.

Storage mindset:

  1. Extract with the tool once to prove the loop
  2. Bank a spare at the Outpost near your elevator path
  3. Take only what the next run’s objective needs
  4. Rebuy or re-roll only when the stash is empty

What belongs in the Outpost stash

Item classStash?Why
CompassYes — keep a spareNavigation insurance for deep layers
Shop / Murch weaponsYes after proving themExpensive; lost on full wipe
Spare demolition toolsSituationalMallet is common; upgraded tools less so

Place functional storage constructs along the spawn → Murch → elevator route so you do not waste post-extract minutes hunting crates. Pairing bonuses on furniture can also feed room XP — details on constructs.

Carry rules for the next descent

Shallow gold run: Mallet, light scrap capacity, maybe no compass if you already know early biomes.

Artifact farm: Compass strongly recommended; leave spare guns home unless Elite prep is the goal.

Elite Encounter push: Bring maintained weapons after visiting Enchantment & Repair, but still leave a backup stash upstairs.

Teaching run for a friend: Leave expensive tools home. New Scrappies learn routes faster when veterans are not panicking about a lost epic gun.

Lost and found is not a stash

Patch 1.04 sends disconnect loot to the ground or a lost and found crate. That protects mid-run disconnects — it is not a replacement for Outpost banking. Hosts should still teach crews to stash before descending. See multiplayer lobby.

Storage and Rot hygiene

Do not board the elevator while sneezing from Rot just because you want to “quickly stash upstairs later.” Cure first (Rot Sickness), then rearrange shelves. Elevator rot events can wreck decorated rooms and scatter carefully placed storage.

Co-op stash etiquette

  • Label (verbally) which crate is team medical / compass / guns
  • Do not “borrow” the only compass without a callout
  • After legendary gumball rewards (fixed in Patch 1.06), bank valuable rolls before celebrating in the scorch
  • Rotate who restocks Murch purchases so one player does not bankrupt the Outpost alone

Linking storage to room tiers

Inventory tiers from room upgrades change how much you can haul — they do not erase wipe risk. Higher carry capacity tempts greed. Counter it with a written extract threshold in extraction runs and a physical stash of “do not take downstairs” tools.

Beginner mistakes

  • Carrying every rare item every run “just in case”
  • Dumping scrap in doorways so Buddy and players path badly
  • Treating Twitch cosmetic hats as if they were combat gear
  • Skipping Outpost cleanup so storage rooms never get XP pairings
  • Ignoring Patch 1.04 disconnect recovery and blaming storage for missing loot
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I take my compass on every run?

Take one when learning deep layers or teaching friends. Keep a spare banked at the Outpost so a wipe does not erase navigation tools.

Is the lost and found crate the same as storage?

No. Lost and found recovers disconnect loot mid-session after Patch 1.04. Outpost storage is deliberate banking between runs.

What items are most important to stash?

Compasses and expensive weapons first. Cosmetics can wait. Never grind glowy artifacts for gold.

Does inventory tier replace storage?

No. Higher inventory lets you carry more, which often increases wipe risk if you refuse to bank spares upstairs.
