GRAIN ROT Getting Started Guide
Everything a new Scrappy needs before the first elevator ride.
GRAIN ROT drops you into a sun-scorched wasteland where exposed wood ignites instantly. You are a Living Spark — an artificial soul — piloting a fragile wooden vessel built by survivors at the Outpost. Your job is not simply to survive monsters underground; you must extract loot, convert it into gold, and reinvest that gold into rooms and constructs that make the next run safer and deeper.
This getting started guide covers the tutorial arc that carries into the full Steam release: meeting Biggy and Murch, cleaning your base, receiving tools, riding the cursed elevator, and returning with your first artifacts. GRAIN ROT is out now on Steam as of August 7, 2026 — the loop below is the core 1.0 onboarding every new Scrappy should internalize before deep-layer greed.
What GRAIN ROT is (in one run)
A standard session looks like this:
- Prepare at the Outpost — repair rooms, place constructs, choose elevator modifiers when available
- Descend with up to three friends (four-player online co-op)
- Smash destructible furniture and constructs for scrap and glowy artifacts
- Feed heavy loot into the Grinder — it is loud and attracts attention
- Fight or flee from Corrupted vessels corrupted by the Rot
- Extract via the elevator before everyone loses their vessels
- Spend gold on upgrades, unlock blueprints, and repeat
Death is not always the end. When your wooden shell breaks, your Spark exits and can guide teammates or possess another vessel. That twist separates GRAIN ROT from pure extraction shooters and is covered in depth in our Co-op & Spark Mechanics guide.
Outpost tutorial: first ten minutes
When you spawn, NPCs Biggy and Murch walk you through base maintenance. The surface world is lethal — stepping into direct scorch without protection burns your vessel — so the Outpost is your only safe hub.
Clean and patch first. Dirty floors and broken walls lower morale mechanics tied to room upgrades. Murch sells cleaning supplies; use them before investing heavily in cosmetic constructs. This mirrors real progression: players who skip maintenance struggle later when rot sickness or elevator events damage rooms.
Receive the demolition mallet. Murch gives you a mallet optimized for breaking weak constructs, not for fighting Corrupted efficiently. Practice on expendable furniture near the Outpost. Scrap from demolition feeds the builder economy — break stuff, build better stuff.
Artifact coins and the gacha machine. Murch also introduces artifact coins. Deposit them in the ball machine near his workshop, then place the resulting artifact in the opener to receive a construct blueprint. Some artifacts are powerful; others are meme-tier surprises. Expect variance and read our artifacts and blueprints guide before spending every coin. After Patch 1.06, legendary gumball rolls should actually grant rewards — see legendary gumball.
Fixer Upper quest beats (launch tutorial)
Launch onboarding expands the demo chores into a clearer quest spine players nicknamed after Biggy’s early jobs:
- Buy a broom from Murch (community guides cite about 25 gold) and clear dirt piles.
- Repair a broken wall — scrap costs are commonly cited around 50 scraps for early patches.
- Use Murch’s starter artifact coins on the ball machine, then the opener for your first blueprint.
- Practice Spark introspection / leaving your body when Biggy asks — it foreshadows vessel breaks underground.
- Smash several Outpost props and craft a couple of simple constructs (chairs work) before Biggy green-lights Deep Layers.
Exact gold/scrap numbers can shift with balance patches — if a vendor price differs, trust the in-game prompt and update Steam. The order of chores matters more than memorizing a wiki spreadsheet: clean and repair before cosmetic spam, then earn the elevator invite.
Bank spare tools with item storage habits once Murch sells compasses or weapons. Meet Little Buddy after Patch 1.04 so follow cues are readable.
Your first elevator descent
The cursed elevator in the basement is the choke point between safety and profit. Stepping in loads the procedural underground layer. The demo featured three biomes; full launch adds two more with unique ambience music per developer news.
Underground, prioritize glowy orbs and interactive furniture. The mallet breaks most weak props; heavier gear unlocks through Outpost room tiers. Do not stand near the Grinder longer than necessary — its scream alerts Corrupted in adjacent zones.
If this is your first co-op session, assign roles loosely: one player scouts noise-sensitive areas, one carries loot toward extraction, one watches rear corridors. Communication matters because friendly trolling is a feature — dropkicks and spark launches are possible. Read our Co-op Tips guide for detailed team strategies.
Controls and settings check
Before descending, confirm your input device in Steam settings. GRAIN ROT ships with full controller support and Steam Deck layouts. PC players should skim our keyboard and mouse reference — the demo uses standard FPS-adjacent movement with context interactions for grab, build rotation, and emotes.
Adjust audio sliders if you are streaming or playing with voice chat. Corrupted react to sound; the Grinder is the loudest player-triggered event early on. Check system requirements to verify your PC can handle deep-layer swarms.
What to upgrade first
After your first successful extraction, resist decorating every room. Follow the room priority tier list — East Wing Resolve stamina upgrades and inventory tiers pay for themselves on run two. Cosmetics are fun but do not help you extract deeper artifacts.
Common beginner mistakes
- Ignoring rot buildup until you are already sneezing in the elevator — read Rot Sickness early
- Grinding every item on-site instead of extracting first
- Splitting the group without a rally point near the elevator
- Saving artifact coins for a perfect roll when basic constructs unlock critical storage
- Not assigning roles before descending — read Co-op Tips for team structure
What comes after the tutorial
Demo progression ends with a message encouraging continued deep-layer exploration and Outpost expansion. Full release adds Elite Encounters, player leveling, Enchantment & Repair Machine, second Outpost floor, and elevator treasure extraction — see launch features for the checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I play GRAIN ROT solo?
Yes. The demo supports single-player. Co-op is recommended for faster loot carrying and Spark revives, but solo is viable with conservative extraction timing.
Is the demo still available?
No. The Steam Next Fest demo ended in June 2026. Buy the full August 7, 2026 Steam release for 1.0 access.
Who are Biggy and Murch?
Outpost NPCs who guide the tutorial. Murch handles tools, artifact coins, and workshop systems. Biggy focuses on base expansion and morale.
What is the Living Spark?
Your true character — a light inside a wooden vessel. When the vessel breaks, the Spark continues the run and can enter a new body.
How do I prepare for co-op?
Read our Co-op Tips guide for role assignments, voice chat rules, and Grinder team protocols before your first four-player session.
